Ariel's Favorite Books

There's nothing like storytime to a preschooler. Their imaginations run wild all day long, and books help.

We like to read a variety of stories, and sometimes you might be surprised at the things a 4 year old enjoys. She's at that age where she's starting to recognize just a few words, which can make reading interesting.

Pretty much any parent knows that any book by Dr. Seuss is a good bet. Some are very hard to read out loud, but kids really love the silly rhymes.

Popup books are still a hit at this age. If you don't mind fragile, One Red Dot is a really fun book. There is one red dot on every page, and it's not always easy to find. You won't believe how complex the popups are, but as I said some of them are pretty fragile. It's the one book I keep on a shelf my kids can't reach easily because I don't want it torn up too quickly.

One you might not think of is Where the Sidewalk Ends. You may remember it from when you were a child. The poems are really fun to read.

Where the Wild Things Are is another of the great stories you might remember. My daughter loves it so much that one night she refused to eat her dinner and was sent to bed without it, then woke up in tears the next morning because she had done that expecting to go to where the Wild Things Are. If you recall the story, you'll understand her logic.

Sometimes the hardest part about children's books is figuring out which one to get. There are so many great choices available.
